Consignment auctions: Are they a good way to get rid of tons of things?

I don't know the different auction types, but I need to get rid of alot of things fast. That would mean that a company picks up the things, sorts it, and sells it. What should I look out for? What kind of percentage is normal? Extra costs? Anyone know this line of work?
